Sorry, but Windows 10 is the cease of the road.

Windows 8 still contained Briefcase in the registry and it could exist activated via a fairly unproblematic registry "tweak" (I did it and I am not a "techy").  This is no longer the example for Windows 10 - no way to activate the Briefcase function?  Note to Windows developers:  There is still a huge percentage of the globe that does Not have Internet access.   How exercise I sync my files then?

Sorry, merely Windows x is the end of the road.

Windows eight even so contained Briefcase in the registry and it could exist activated via a fairly unproblematic registry "tweak" (I did information technology and I am not a "techy").  This is no longer the example for Windows 10 - no way to activate the Briefcase office?  Notation to Windows developers:  At that place is still a huge percentage of the earth that does Non accept Cyberspace access.   How do I sync my files then?

I as well ask the question "how practice I sync my files so" NOT on the cloud?

The files I want to sync to a usb drive are not files I want on the cloud.  I also practice not desire to go looking in all my folders each day to re-create the file back to the usb drive.  The benefit to the BRIEFCASE was doing that in one case and the briefcase doing the syncing.

Please bring it back!!!  In an early update to Windows 10!!

I apply a program from Microsoft's PowerToys chosen SyncToy.  The current program is 64 flake version 2.ane.  I lets you choose many different folders to synchronize between devices and computers, but it does not compress or save the files in whatsoever backup format, they are copied as is.

You can become SyncToy here:

So its in in that location, just not 'activated'. Dang. That was mean of them.

Then, briefcases copied over should also piece of work so too. Thats encouraging. (Mine are on a retention stick, including a few blanks for creating more briefcases from, to support specific files from my main computer/tablet.)

I accept used Windows Briefcases as a simple means of data portability between computers and equally a secondary style to fill-in personal files, such as financial and medical files, to encrypted external USB and Firewire devices.

For me, quondam Briefcases have worked on XP, Vista, eight, 8.one, and x, until at present.  The Windows 10 update to 1703 no longer provides Briefcase functionality of any sort.  Previously, Windows 10 synched ("updated") erstwhile Briefcases just would not create new ones.  Now, with 1703, it won't "update" (sync) existing Briefcases.

I am aware of alternative methods and tools to Briefcase, and in other circumstances I've used some of them.  None were as completely uncomplicated equally Briefcase used in conjunction with encrypted external devices.  I am baffled why Microsoft would remove this low-overhead, built-in functionality, forcing people similar me with long Microsoft operating system and Office experience into engineering a new set of methods for portable, synchronised datasets on removable, encrypted devices.

Thanks for the Community post on registry hacks for Briefcase.  I don't anticipate this will restore all the missing Briefcase functionality on the so-called Creators Update 1703, and I view registry hacks as something to avoid if at all possible.

The all-time solution would be for Microsoft to restore the Briefcase functionality via a supported update immediately to support legacy Briefcase users, as well as anyone else who would benefit from this expressionless simple tool.

In the meantime, does anyone take guidance on how to get existing, legacy Briefcases to sync on Windows ten 1703?

I establish an older Microsoft app called SyncToy (Version 2.1.0.0).  It is like shooting fish in a barrel to set up and use.  I sync files from my PC to USB drives, external drives, and internal drives.  There are several configuration choices to meet your needs.  I utilize with W-10 pro v1703 and and then far it works fine.

I found an older Microsoft app called SyncToy (Version ii.ane.0.0).  It is easy to set and use.  I sync files from my PC to USB drives, external drives, and internal drives.  At that place are several configuration choices to meet your needs.  I employ with West-10 pro v1703 and then far it works fine.

Yeah, thanks, ChiefMike, I might requite that a try in coming weeks.  I've seen SyncToy every bit a not-congenital-in alternative for some time now, but have yet to install information technology myself.  The thing about Briefcase, though -- at to the lowest degree before Microsoft decided to remove information technology without fanfare -- was its full integration (built-in) and utter simplicity.  I utilize an splendid 3rd party tool, AISBackup, for my principal backups multiple times daily.  And I create consummate disc images, using the Windows tool for imaging, every so ofttimes (roughly, every three-6 months) so I won't have to rebuild the Bone and my programs if things become completely bad.   I used Briefcase updates one time or twice weekly, and so I take my most valuable files if, say, my external device used by AISBackup fails.  I too put a copy of my Briefcase files in my bank'south safe deposit box every 2-three months.  Microsoft'due south removal of Briefcase in W10 1703 knocks a hole in my long continuing, multi-method backup disciple.
